The Blue Bottle Demonstration
1.
Glucose + OH  -
<--------->
Glucoside- +H2O
2.
O2 (g)
<--------->
O2 (aq)
3.
O2 (aq) + MW
<--------->
MB
4.
MB + Glucoside-
<--------->
MW + other products

MW is methylene white and MB is methylene blue

There are two stoppered bottles in this demonstration. One contains oxygen gas and the other contains nitrogen gas. Shaking the bottles allows the gas (oxygen or nitrogen) to enter the liquid. Once oxygen is in the liquid, it can react with methylene white to form methylene blue. On standing undisturbed, the blue color fades because it reacts with the glucoside.
