Hydra nematocysts on tentacles

hydra nematocysts

Image by: Bryan Yang and Marc Perkins; ~400x magnification

Hydra tentacles with fired nematocysts. The hydra was exposed to acetic acid (vinegar), which caused the hydra's nematocysts to discharge as well as causing some of the nematocysts to dislodge from teh hydra. The acetic acid also killed the hydra. The nematosysts are the little bulb shaped structures with what look like fine hairs extending out of them.
