Thoracic region as it appears soon after opening on a dissected, preserved rat. The rat's blood vessels were injected with latex to make them more visible.

1. Inner wall of the rib cage - covered in parietal pleura
2. Lung - covered in visceral pleura
3. Right atrium
4. Right ventricle
5. Thymus gland (in normal position)
6. Left atrium
7. Lung
8. Diaphragm
